on the iPod: left the tunes at home
After working a half day at the high school (and everybody thinks teachers don't do anything in the summer), I was totally feelin' it. Despite the heat I knew that I wanted to get out for a short run. I'm thinking it was probably a biological response from my body to purge the added impurities that usually accompany a long weekend with old friends. Those weekends are the best, but my thirtysomething body isn't twentysomething anymore. Calling Mrs. Murie on the way home to inquire if she'd be interested in lacing up, she immediately said yes. Win.
We left from her house and warmed up through her neighborhood on our way to the Skull Creek trail. Heading north, the pace was fast, as it always is with Mrs. Murie. She's an elite runner and knows her stuff really well. I knew what I was getting into, sacrifices should always be made for the right company. It's good for me.
With both of us doing different things all summer, it was good to catch up, as I hadn't seen her in about three weeks. We talked about our travels, about her new job at Fayetteville High School and how much we're going to miss her at Bentonville High School, and other stuff. The heat was intense for sure. Washington Regional was our turn-around, we went in for water and a quick AC break.
The run home was fairly uneventful. I had to walk twice, probably a couple hundred yards total, but never stopped moving. We saw my good friend Uncle Lew on the way home and made him promise to call for drinks soon. He's a great friend.
Upon our return we cooled off in Mrs. Murie's pool. Excellent! We'd been talking about getting together for a swim, so it was inevitable that we'd tack a run onto the front of it. Obvi! I got to meet her mother who lives down the street. Basking in the sun and enjoying the pool, we all three commiserated about our love of fried okra. It's a Southern thing. God created the month of August for Southerners to eat fried okra. I hope my own mother reads this post and decides to fry a pan soon. That'd make me real happy. Just sayin'...
